Flood snaps SH-22 at Champara; Ghilamara-Gogamukh link hit

Dibrugarh: Floodwaters have severed State Highway-22 at Champara in Lakhimpur district, cutting the vital Ghilamara (Lakhimpur)-Gogamukh (Dhemaji) link for the fifth consecutive day and prompting authorities to temporarily close the road, officials said on Sunday.Heavy rain in Arunachal Pradesh’s hill areas have swollen the Jiadhal, Kumotiya and Nanoi rivers — tributaries of the Brahmaputra — triggering a sudden spate that overflowed onto the highway at Champara, Dhakuakhana MLA Naba Kumar Doley said after inspecting the site on Sunday.“Heavy rains in the upstream hill areas of Arunachal Pradesh have caused the Jiadhal, Kumotiya and Nanoi rivers to swell, and the resulting overflow has cut off the highway at Champara,” he said.Doley said the region is familiar with such flooding. “This is not unusual. Every two to three years, heavy rainfall in the Arunachal hills leads to flooding of this nature in our area,” he said. He added that the highway is also a critical link between Dhakuakhana and Majuli, making the closure especially disruptive.“With the highway cut off, people are being forced to take alternate roads and long detours just to reach Dhakuakhana or Majuli,” Doley said, noting the inconvenience to daily commuters, traders and students. On the prospects of reopening, the MLA said, “If the weather improves in the coming days, the situation on the ground will improve as well. Our priority is to reopen the highway at the earliest while ensuring public safety.”Doley said flooding has affected six nearby villages, with around 40 families shifted to relief camps as water levels continue to threaten low-lying homes.
