Chandigarh: Shots rang out at a Sector 52 petrol pump late Friday night, leaving people present panicked. In a high-octane drama, a man in an SUV attempted to break through a police cordon and escape. The 25-year-old was wanted in connection with a firing incident outside a realtor’s house in Phase 10, Mohali.In the encounter that followed, Manish, a Kharar resident, sustained bullet injuries to his hand and abdomen. The shootout took place around 11:15pm, with around four rounds being fired.DSP (South-West) Dhiraj Kumar Singh said Manish was travelling in a Ford Endeavour with a woman friend. When he stopped at the petrol pump to refuel, the Kharar crime branch team, which had been following him, surrounded his SUV using their vehicles.Police said Manish rammed his SUV into the police vehicles in an attempt to breach the cordon, prompting the police team to open fire in self-defence. A bullet hit Manish, but he managed to escape from the spot, ramming into a motorcycle in the commotion.The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the petrol pump, police said.After receiving information about the firing, DSP Dheeraj Kumar Singh, DSP Lakshya Pandey, crime branch personnel, Sector 36 SHO Chiranji and teams from the Operations Cell reached the petrol pump and launched an investigation.Meanwhile, Sector 36 police received information that a man with bullet injuries to his arm and abdomen had been admitted to GMSH-16. Dheeraj Kumar Singh and other police personnel reached the hospital and identified him as Manish. Police said his friends had taken him to the hospital, from where he was referred to PGIMER.According to police, Manish was wanted in connection with firing outside the house of a businessman in Phase 10, Mohali, on Monday night. Two unidentified men had allegedly fired several rounds outside the house before escaping on a motorcycle.DSP Dheeraj Kumar Singh said a case of attempt to murder, rash driving and obstructing govt officials from discharging their duty was registered against Manish at Sector 36 police station. He will be formally arrested after his discharge from hospital, police said.
