Abohar shooting: Victim’s family, Valmiki community block road, seek arrest

Abohar: Family members of a man injured in the Sept 27 Abohar shooting and members of the Valmiki community staged a sit-in and blocked traffic at Sadar Bazaar on Tuesday, demanding the arrest of the accused. Members of the sanitation workers’ union also joined the protest. The protesters demanded the arrest of Sagar Nepali, whom they alleged was being shielded by AAP leader Shiv Lal Doda. Police are investigating the allegation.Akash, alias Bhalu, brother of injured Ajay Kumar, said police had registered a case on his statement but had not arrested Sagar Nepali. He alleged that a previous dispute over construction of a shed at Sant Nagar Dharamshala had led to the attack and demanded that Doda’s alleged role be investigated.Ajay, who suffered a bullet injury in his abdomen, alleged that the attack was linked to a case in which his cousin Bhalu was a witness and Shiv Lal Doda and his nephew Amit Doda were sentenced to 20 years in prison. He alleged that after Shiv Lal was released on bail on Feb 8, he began threatening Bhalu and his family.Ajay alleged that he was also falsely implicated in a case during the Abohar municipal corporation elections, while Bhalu was booked under an attempt-to-murder charge. He said he and Bhalu were standing outside the community hall on Sept 27 when an unidentified assailant opened fire, hitting him in the abdomen. He was given first aid at Abohar before being referred to a hospital in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan.Abohar DSP Harish Kumar said police had arrested two accused in connection with the shooting and recovered the weapon.“If the investigation reveals the involvement of any other individual, they will also be named in the case, and action will be taken in accordance with the law,” he said.
