Mumbai: Charkop Police has registered an FIR against a developer and his wife for cheating six doctors to the tune of Rs 39.8 lakh under the guise of renting out a property to them for starting a hospital. The complaint was lodged on the basis of a statement given by one of the doctors who runs an existing clinic at Charkop. He told the police that the couple were his patients in 2020 and offered to search for land for him and his colleagues to start a hospital. The couple said they own an office at Mindspace in Malad and the basement, ground floor and first floor of the structure were available for renting out. They claimed to have developed the building. A meeting was conducted between the six doctors and the couple at the clinic in Charkop. It was decided that a monthly rent of Rs 10.5 lakh and a six-monthly rent of Rs 63.5 lakh were payable for the new hospital. A 10% token was charged immediately by the couple.Thereafter the couple took money under various pretexts such as ‘change of user’ process, bank guarantee, society maintenance and BMC taxes. Totally, the doctors paid Rs 49.8 lakh to the couple. But later the couple claimed their nephew had already taken out a loan against the property and they could no longer honour their commitment to rent it out. The doctors asked them to return the money they had taken. But the couple returned only Rs 10 lakh. When they wouldn’t pay up the balance and threatened the doctors, a police complaint was lodged.
