FIR filed against power discom after engineer electrocuted, falls into flooded drain in Noida

Noida: An FIR was registered against the electricity department over the death of a 23-year-old engineer who was allegedly electrocuted before falling into an open drain in Sector 58 on July 9, when the city was pounded by heavy rain.CCTV footage shows Aryan Prajapati, a resident of Kuncha locality in Kaimganj, suffered an electric shock from a nearby pole while walking along the drain, which was missing several slabs. As he collapsed and fell in, a colleague rushed to help him but appears to move back when he receives a shock as well. Bystanders can also be seen watching from a distance in fear of also getting shocked.Previously, locals also told TOI the drain was too shallow for drowning to be the cause of death, demanding an inspection of the electrical infrastructure in areas that are regularly waterlogged during rain. They also urged that action be taken against officials found responsible for any negligence.The incident triggered widespread outrage among residents and the victim’s family, who alleged negligence on the part of the authorities responsible for maintaining electrical infrastructure and ensuring public safety. They demanded accountability and strict action against those responsible for the tragedy.Police said they are examining all aspects of the incident, including how electric current reached the drain and whether lapses in maintenance or safety measures contributed to the fatal accident. Police are also looking into whether any department or agency failed to address potential hazards in the area.“If negligence is established during the investigation, strict legal action will be taken against the officials found responsible,” an officer said.On Monday, cops approached the victim’s family, following which his uncle lodged a complaint. Police assured them that the probe would be conducted fairly and stringent legal action would be taken against those found responsible. They also promised to facilitate compensation for the family in accordance with the applicable rules.
