FIR against Mukhtar aide over arms licence anomaly

Varanasi: Ghazipur police on Friday registered an FIR against Mohammad Shahid, an associate of the Mukhtar Ansari gang, the then station house officer (SHO) of Mohammadabad police station, and the area lekhpal for allegedly facilitating the issuance of an arms licence in 2001 using the address of a rented house by falsely showing it as Shahid’s permanent as well as present address.SP Rural Atul Sonkar said that during the verification of 145 firearms bought and sold on 51 arms licences procured by Ansari’s family members and associates of the gang, it was found that Shahid obtained a licence for a single-barrel gun on April 28, 2001, using the address of a rented house in the Purani Kachahari area under Mohammadabad police station.Police found that Shahid is originally a resident of Abdul Hamid Nagar, Ward-4, under Saidpur Kotwali.

He lived in the rented house in Purani Kachahari from 1999 to 2015.In the arms licence application form, he mentioned the address of the rented house and in the verification reports the then station in charge inspector of Mohammadabad police station and lekhpal verified it as his permanent address and sent recommendation to grant the licence. After procuring licence, Shahid’s bought and sold weapons several times.The action for verification and investigation in 145 firearms bought and sold on 51 arms licences issued in the names of family and members of Mukhtar gang was started by Ghazipur police on the instructions of DIG of Varanasi Range Vaibhav Krishna. The process of lodging FIRs on detection of irregularities started on Jul 22 when similar case was registered against Mukhtar’s elder brother and SP’s Ghazipur MP Afjal Ansari and two arms clerks on the charges of disappearance of files related to an arms licence, criminal conspiracy and suspicion of misuse of a weapon.
