Family register certificate valid for SIR hearings, subject to verification: CEO

Hyderabad: The Telangana Family Register Certificate will be accepted as one of the documents during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, but election authorities will verify it along with other supporting records before taking a final decision on voter eligibility, chief electoral officer (CEO) C Sudharshan Reddy said.

The clarification assumes significance as the state govt has introduced the Telangana Family Register Certificate, while concerns have been raised over the availability of documents prescribed for the electoral roll revision exercise.“Family Register Certificate is one of the 12 documents that can be produced in cases where notices are issued during the SIR verification process. We have to study the Family Register Certificate to be issued by the state govt,” Reddy said.Asked whether reliance on the certificate could raise concerns as it is generated from the food security card (commonly known as ration card), database, the CEO said officials would not treat it as conclusive proof. “We will verify the other documents in such cases. The ERO (electoral registration officer) will take a decision after thorough verification and may ask for further documents,” he said.Electronic family registerThe clarification came after the govt issued orders on July 25 constituting a statewide electronic Telangana Family Register and introducing a Family Register Certificate through the MeeSeva platform. The Family Register Identification Number will be the same as the family’s ration card number. The register will include the names of the head and members of the family, their relationships, ages, dates of birth, gender, Aadhaar numbers and present address.AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had earlier informed the Election Commission of India that three of the 12 documents listed for electoral roll revision — Permanent Resident Certificate, National Register of Citizens and Family Register — were not available in Telangana.
