Hisar: The family of 38-year-old electronics showroom owner Happy Chopra, who allegedly died by suicide at his home on Thursday, refused to accept his body on Friday, demanding justice and strict action against those they hold responsible. The body was subsequently taken to Agroha Medical College for postmortem.Happy’s wife, Preeti Chopra, alleged that financiers had been putting sustained pressure on him to repay a loan in one lump sum. She also alleged that one of the financiers would bring prospective buyers to their house and threaten to sell it, besides threatening to take away their children. The family claimed the loan carried interest of around 2.5% a month, amounting to nearly Rs 50,000 in monthly interest. According to Happy’s younger brother Charanjit Chopra, the financiers had been repeatedly calling him over the past two months demanding repayment.Call records cited by the family reportedly show around 27 calls between noon and 1pm before the incident. A call lasting around three minutes and 40 seconds was made to Happy at about 12.23pm. The last call came around 12.59pm, which he did not answer.Charanjit said the family had agreed to settle the outstanding amount on Sept 1, but the demand was later raised from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh by financier Surender and his nephew Golu, according to the family. The family said Golu and Sonu had visited Happy on Wednesday evening and again on Thursday morning.Charanjit said he and Happy were upstairs at around 1pm when Happy heard the doorbell and suspected that the financier had arrived to collect the money. When Charanjit went downstairs to open the door, he heard a gunshot. Happy was found lying injured in the bedroom with his licensed revolver nearby, the family said.Happy, who ran Khalsa Electronics on Barah Quarter Road, is survived by his wife and two sons, aged around 12 and 16.Police said CCTV footage from the area is being examined and statements of family members and witnesses are being recorded.Further legal action will be taken on the basis of the investigation, police said.
