Enough foodgrain stocks in Mizoram to last monsoon, says FCI

Aizawl: With monsoon having set in the northeast, the FCI on Sunday announced that Mizoram had enough foodgrain stocks to last for four months, effectively covering the entire span of the season.According to a press release issued by the FCI divisional office on Sunday, Mizoram’s total stock of foodgrains—rice and wheat—stored in FCI godowns across Mizoram stood at 24,858 metric tonnes (rice: 23,862 MT; wheat: 996 MT), as of Saturday. In the statement, FCI further said the current physical stock of 24,858 MT was sufficient to meet requirements under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and other welfare schemes in Mizoram for the next four months. The state’s monthly allocation requirement, under NFSA and other welfare schemes, is approximately 6,209 MT of rice and 123 MT of wheat, and current reserves, along with pipeline arrivals, exceed safety buffer norms. To ensure uninterrupted supply and replenish stocks ahead of seasonal transitions, foodgrains are being moved into the state from surplus regions through the railheads at Bairabi (serving FSDs Bualpui, Kolasib and Bairabi) and Sairang (serving FSDs Sairang, Aizawl, Lunglei and Lawngtlai), the note further said.A total of 20,032 MT of foodgrains is currently in the pipeline through rail rakes earmarked for Mizoram during the monsoon months of June and July.
