Midnapore: Two elephant-related incidents in Jhargram and West Midnapore on Sunday morning left a 75-year-old woman dead in one area and a young elephant dead in another.In Jhargram, Forest department sources said Parbati Deb Singha, 75, was killed in an elephant attack at Birbahanpur village under Jhitka Beat of Lalgarh Police Station. Around 5 am, she encountered a herd of four elephants moving through the area. As she tried to run, one elephant grabbed her and slammed her to the ground, causing fatal injuries.Locals took her to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. Officials said the body will be handed to the family after autopsy and compensation will be paid as per govt norms.Meanwhile, in neighbouring West Midnapore, a male elephant calf aged 3 to 4 years was found dead in a muddy paddy field at Jhariyashol village, under the Gurguripal Police Station. Locals alerted the forest department after spotting the elephant in mud, who recovered the carcass for a post-mortem examination.Officials are probing whether the calf suffered from any illness and said the autopsy report would confirm the exact cause of death. A herd of 30-35 elephants was reported to be roaming the area around the time of the incident.
