Kolkata: The transgender community in Kolkata formally inaugurated its unique Ardhanarishvara Durga Puja on Tuesday at Garima Greh, a shelter home for transgenders at Tollygunge. Combining the forms of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati into a single form, the unique Ardhanarishvara idol symbolises Adishakti. It represents the balance of nature where masculine and feminine elements coexist as integral parts.Ranjita Sinha, the main organiser, highlighted the deeper religious and social significance behind the initiative. “Transgender people are among the most neglected in society. This is our own puja celebration where everything—from idol making to the rituals—is conducted entirely by our community. Our goal is to remind society that transgender individuals are not outsiders; we are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, representing the cosmic unity and balance of Purusha (masculine) and Prakriti (feminine) energies essential for creation.”Sinha added, “For nine years, we have not immersed our idol. We keep her with us at home, caring for her with continuous devotion and daily rituals.”
