Elderly couple arrested for murdering their son over demand for non-vegetarian food

Pune: The Warje police have arrested a man (65) and his wife (60) for allegedly beating their 30-year-old son to death at their home during the intervening night of Aug 24 and 25 after he demanded non-vegetarian food for dinner while in an inebriated condition. His parents refused to serve him non-vegetarian food, citing the month of Shravan.“The deceased was a casual worker. His father, too, was a casual worker earlier but is currently unemployed. His mother works as a nurse,” senior inspector Mahesh Bolkotgi said. The deceased’s elder brother (34) lodged a complaint with the police. “The deceased consumed liquor regularly. He used to pick fights with his parents daily,” Bolkotgi said.“The elderly couple initially tried to pass off the death as an accident,” he added.According to police, the complainant lives nearby, while his sister stays with the family.“The deceased returned home around 8.30pm on Aug 24 in an inebriated condition and demanded non-vegetarian food for dinner. His parents, however, refused to serve him non-vegetarian food, which led to an argument between the couple and the deceased,” the officer said.“The couple then punched and kicked him, causing bleeding from his face and head,” he said. The post-mortem report stated that the deceased died due to internal injuries.“The couple tried to wake him up around 4am on Aug 25, but he did not respond. They then went to their elder son’s house and told him that the deceased had reached home around 2am in an inebriated condition and was bleeding when he arrived. They claimed that he might have met with an accident somewhere. However, the complainant had seen him returning home around 8.30pm on Aug 24, following which he approached the police,” he said.
