Diamond trader cheated of Rs 95 lakh, three booked

Surat: Katargam police have booked three men, including a diamond trader and two brokers, for allegedly cheating a diamond manufacturer of Rs 95 lakh by using forged documents and a fake stamp of a jewellery firm to procure diamonds.According to the complaint filed by diamond manufacturer Pratik Mangukiya, the accused, Manthan Goyani, approached him earlier this year seeking diamonds for Ikisha Jewels. Goyani claimed to be an employee of the firm and, as the company was reputed, Mangukiya supplied him diamonds worth Rs 1.16 crore between February and April.Goyani made a partial payment of Rs 21.50 lakh. To gain Mangukiya’s confidence, he allegedly sent him photographs of the firm’s owner, Mahendra Kalathiya, during the transactions.Goyani later stopped responding to Mangukiya’s calls. When Mangukiya contacted Kalathiya, he learnt that Goyani was not employed by the firm.Further inquiry allegedly revealed that Bhavdip Jasani had helped Goyani create a fake stamp of Ikisha Jewels and procure the diamonds. Another accused, Nirav Gadhiya, allegedly posed as an employee of the firm and negotiated with Mangukiya for the purchase of diamonds.Mangukiya subsequently approached Katargam police, alleging that the three men had conspired to cheat him. Police have registered a case of cheating and forgery against the trio and begun an investigation.
