Dwarka Expressway link floods again, 2 months after GMDA promises permanent fix

Gurgaon: A key road linking sectors 102 and 102A to Dwarka Expressway was flooded again on Monday, nearly two months after GMDA promised a permanent fix once the monsoon ended.Stagnant water submerged potholes on the low-lying stretch near the expressway underpass after parts of the city received over 50 mm of rainfall, putting commuters, especially two-wheeler riders, at risk. With no alternative route, many commuters have little choice but to wade through stagnant water and cross the damaged stretch, where potholes are difficult to spot until vehicles hit them. Some motorists and cyclists use the drainage-cum-footpath to bypass the water, creating a safety hazard for pedestrians. The road is a key link for residents of Sector 102, Sector 102A and surrounding areas, including Basai, Kherki Majra and Dhankot.“The problem persists despite GMDA’s assurance that it would fix the stretch after the monsoon. Even a little rain leads to waterlogging, and the road is riddled with potholes that remain hidden under stagnant water. Two-wheeler riders frequently lose their balance and fall because they cannot judge the depth of the potholes. Those who use the road regularly know where the potholes are and try to avoid them, but people using the stretch for the first time often end up falling. Vehicles also break down when they hit potholes hidden beneath the water. Despite the monsoon having ended, there has been no visible action from GMDA to resolve the problem,” said Gursimron Aurora, a resident of Adani Oyster Grande. The recurring waterlogging has raised concerns over the effectiveness of the drainage network built as part of the road’s redevelopment. GMDA redeveloped the road last year at a cost of Rs 11.8 crore, including drainage work.In Aug, after the stretch flooded again, a GMDA official had acknowledged that a depression of around 50-60 metres was causing water to accumulate because of a mismatch in drain levels. The official had said an overhead high-tension power line had earlier restricted the road level from being raised. With the line removed, GMDA planned to raise the road to the required level after the monsoon to provide a permanent solution.Kamal Malhotra, another resident of Adani Oyster Grande, said residents had been asking GMDA for the past two years to correct the road design and raise the depressed stretch.“The height of the high-tension electrical cables has already been raised to around 20 metres above road level. GMDA should now act without further delay, raise the depressed stretch to the appropriate level and ensure proper drainage connectivity so that residents and commuters do not continue to face this problem every time it rains,” he said.Parag Anand, a resident of Joyville in Sector 102, said the recurring waterlogging had become a persistent hardship for daily commuters. “The road was built to provide smooth connectivity, and it is important that it remains usable during rainfall. We hope GMDA addresses the drainage deficiencies and takes preventive measures to ensure safe and hassle-free commuting,” he said.Meanwhile, a GMDA official said the surface drain was connected to the master drain and the authority would check for any blockage or debris obstructing the flow of water. “If there is any blockage or debris in the drain, it will be cleared. We will also reconstruct the road near the underpass, where the carriageway is depressed, and raise its level to prevent water stagnation. The work will be taken up to ensure the problem is resolved before the next monsoon,” the official said.
