DUSU polls could be called off if rules flouted: Warns University

New Delhi: Delhi University has warned that the DUSU elections would be called off if it keps getting complaints that candidates were using more than five cars in their campaign convoy or were bringing luxury cars on the campus. The campaign has caused traffic jams and violence on the campus in the run-up to the polls.University officials met DUSU office-bearers, representatives of various student bodies and police officers Monday to review the arrangements and alleged violations. The meeting, where the ACP of north district, SHO of Maurice Nagar police station and a traffic inspector were present, was held at the proctor’s office.Addressing issues discussed at the previous meeting on July 16, the proctor issued a warning to student representatives over non-compliance with regulations laid down by the Delhi High Court and the Lyngdoh committee, saying this had resulted in “disorder on the university campus”.Officials flagged the use of luxury vehicles for election related activities and unauthorised parking by candidates along Chhatra Marg and University Road, which was causing traffic congestion. The guidelines issued after the meeting said that all candidates will be provided authorised vehicle stickers by the proctor’s office. Vehicles without these stickers will not be allowed to enter the university campus or any college. Candidates can park only in designated areas and not in a manner that obstructs traffic or inconveniences pedestrians. The university also prohibited the use of pamphlets or other printed material that could result in littering or damage to public property. The proctor warned that if a candidate or his/her supporters are found consuming alcohol or any intoxicating substance in a vehicle or anywhere on campus, including parking areas and roadsides, the candidate’s nomination would be cancelled. The university said any violation of the rules could lead to the cancellation of a candidate’s nomination. “The entire election may be cancelled” in case of violations, the proctor said. The university reiterated that all candidates, student organisations and other stakeholders must ensure that election activities are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.
