Drunken driver runs over labourer sleeping on Panaji footpath, victim dead

times news networkPanaji: A drunk driver lost control of his four-wheeler and mounted it on the footpath, driving it over and killing a man sleeping on the pavement in Panaji. Police have filed an FIR charging the accused, identified as Manjeet Singh, of culpable homicide, besides rash and negligent driving under the influence of alcohol.Singh, 28, was driving from Miramar towards the Panaji ferry point, and on reaching near the Panaji market bus stop, he lost control of his vehicle. The four-wheeler went off the road, rammed into the sculpture near the bus stop and then hit the bus stop structure and a scooter that was nearby.Police have only been able to identify the deceased as Manoj so far, and he is believed to have been a homeless labourer, who was spending the night on the pavement. He was sleeping near the art structure, sustained grievous injuries, and was shifted for medical treatment. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries, police said.Police said Manoj was driving under the influence of alcohol and is believed to have lost control of his hatchback car and veered off the road.Singh has been arrested and further investigation is on in the case.
