Dibrugarh: A total of 10 people were arrested, and a huge cache of heroin, cash, gold ornaments, vehicles and other materials were seized in an anti-drug operation at Harijan Colony in Kalibari, opposite Dibrugarh Town Railway Station on Sunday evening.Acting on intelligence inputs, multiple police teams, led by DSP (headquarters) Nayan Moni Baruah, carried out coordinated raids at several abandoned railway colony quarters and other locations suspected to be hubs of an organised drug trafficking network operating in the heart of the town.During raids, police recovered 79.55g of heroin concealed in eight containers, along with a mobile phone and a SIM card that are expected to provide crucial leads in the investigation.A large quantity of syringes, allegedly used for drug consumption and distribution, was also seized. The seized items included 40 packets containing 240 insulin syringes, six packets containing 60 high-tech insulin syringes, and over 200 used syringes.“We were receiving inputs about a syndicate operating from the abandoned railway quarters for some time. We planned a coordinated operation involving multiple teams to ensure no one could escape or alert others,” said DSP Baruah.Police also seized Rs 4,92,710 in cash, believed to be proceeds from the illegal drug trade, along with four vehicles, including two two-wheelers, allegedly used for transporting and distributing narcotics.In addition, gold ornaments suspected to have been purchased with drug money were recovered, including two pairs of gold earrings, a gold chain, a gold ring and a five-gram silver coin.All 10 arrested individuals have been taken into custody for further interrogation. Police said several additional names have surfaced during questioning, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend other persons allegedly linked to the network. However, the alleged kingpin of the syndicate is reported to have escaped and remains at large.“We are aware that the main person behind this network has managed to flee. Our teams are actively working to track him down, and we are confident he will be apprehended soon,” Baruah added.Dibrugarh SSP Abhijit Gurav said, “The action against drugs in Dibrugarh will continue relentlessly. No one involved in this trade will be spared.”
