Aizawl: The Centre has cleared the appointment of Mizoram Judicial Service officer Helen Dawngliani as an additional judge of Gauhati High Court, officials said on Wednesday.The appointment notification was issued on Tuesday, following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation on Aug 18 of Dawngliani and Nagaland-based advocate Nchumbemo Mozhui for elevation to the high court.Dawngliani will be the second Mizo woman to serve as a Gauhati HC judge, after Justice Marli Vankung, who retired on March 3, 2026. She will also be the fifth Mizo judge to serve on the high court.The other Mizo judges are Justices T Vaiphei, Michael Zothankhuma and Nelson Sailo. Justices Vaiphei and Vankung have retired.Her appointment is significant for Mizoram, which has had limited representation in the higher judiciary.Dawngliani joined the Mizoram Judicial Service on May 24, 2011. During her career, she served as Additional District and Sessions Judge in the Aizawl and Lunglei judicial districts.She was Registrar of Gauhati HC and secretary to Mizoram govt’s law and judicial department from April 2021 to July 2024. She also served as govt advocate-cum-additional public prosecutor at Aizawl bench of the Gauhati HC.Dawngliani’s husband, Haulianthanga, is a senior advocate. The couple lives in Ramhlun in Aizawl.
