Dominating tricky terrain, Dibrugarh-posted CRPF officer cycles distance equal to circling Earth 4 times

Dibrugarh: A CRPF officer currently posted in Dibrugarh achieved a rare endurance milestone by cycling a cumulative one lakh miles (over 1.6 lakh km), over the past seven years, a distance equivalent to circling the Earth four times.A native of Dehradun in Uttarakhand, Sohan Singh Rawat (58) has over 35 years of uniformed service to his name, having served across various parts of the country. Rawat is an assistant commandant with the CRPF.He began his cycling journey in late 2018 as a simple means of commuting to the office. What started as a practical daily habit gradually evolved into a passionate pursuit of endurance milestones.Since Jan 2019, Rawat has been meticulously documenting every ride using a dedicated cycling device mounted on his bicycle, seamlessly synced with a fitness application on his smartphone. The device automatically records each ride’s distance, speed, elevation and route in real time, with the data uploading directly to the app, ensuring an accurate, tamper-proof log of every mile he has ever pedalled.“Every kilometre I have ridden since Jan 2019 is recorded on the app. The device on my cycle captures it all – the early morning rides, the long highways, the mountain climbs. It is my honest witness,” said Rawat.“Cycling began as a way to get to work, but it soon became a way of life. Every mile taught me something new about discipline, resilience and the beauty of this country,” he added.Among his most notable achievements is the completion of a gruelling 1,000-kilometre endurance ride from Guwahati to Dibrugarh and back — a test of both physical and mental fortitude. He is also a three-time holder of the prestigious Super Randonneur title, an honour awarded by the Audax Club Parisien of France, one of the world’s most respected bodies in long-distance endurance cycling.Rawat’s cycling routes are as inspiring as the distance itself. His rides have taken him through some of India’s most sacred and challenging terrains, including the Chaar Dhaam and Panch Kedar pilgrimages, Siddh Shakti Peethas, and revered temples such as Kartik Swamy Temple, Binsar Mahadev, Hanol and Deeba Danda in Uttarakhand. He has also cycled to Shree Parshuram Kund in Arunachal Pradesh and Majuli Island in Assam.“Serving the nation in uniform and exploring it on a bicycle are two sides of the same coin for me. Both demand commitment, and both have given me everything,” Rawat added. His colleagues and superiors have praised his extraordinary achievement as an inspiration not only within the CRPF but for fitness enthusiasts across the country.
