Domestic help arrested for stealing valuables worth Rs 50L from doctors’ house in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: A 51-year-old domestic help, who worked at her employer’s house for nearly 18 years, was arrested by Jayanagar police for stealing gold jewellery, silver articles, and other valuables, worth around Rs 50 lakh.The accused, Jayanthi, from Poornapragna Layout in Uttarahalli, was working at the house of a doctor couple in Jayanagar 5th Block. The couple approached police on April 9, stating on March 4, they kept nearly Rs 1.3lakh in cash inside a cupboard to pay a priest for a family function. When they checked the cupboard the following night, they found that Rs 65,000 was missing.Growing suspicious, they verified the valuables stored in the cupboard and found that gold jewellery, silver articles, silver biscuits, and cash were missing. They suspected Jayanthi and questioned her. However, she claimed she had not even seen the jewellery and cash. The couple fired her and, after a month, they lodged a complaint.When police began probing, they learnt that Jayanthi was on the run after locking her house. She was caught on June 22. During interrogation, she confessed to stealing the valuables and cash. She had hidden the stolen property at her house.Police recovered 262 grams of gold jewellery, 2.4kg of silver biscuits and other silver articles, Rs 65,000 in cash, and five silk saris. The total value of the recovered valuables is around Rs 50 lakh.Since Jayanthi had worked in the house for 18 years and gained the trust of the couple, she had access to all the rooms even in their absence.
