DMC conducts eviction drive at AMCH, flags sanitation violations

Dibrugarh: In an attempt to curb hygiene and sanitation violations, Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation on Thursday inspected the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) campus and evicted unauthorised shops.DMC commissioner Shivani Jerngal led the drive. Officials identified establishments operating without authorisation and inspected food stalls for cleanliness and storage practices.Several unauthorised shops were flagged, while officials found serious hygiene lapses. The most alarming violation was food items being stored inside a bathroom at one establishment, drawing sharp criticism from the inspection team.“Such practices pose a significant risk to public health and are unacceptable. DMC remains committed to maintaining cleanliness, food safety and public health. Strict action will continue against violators to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for all,” Jerngal said.Thursday’s drive was the latest in a series of enforcement actions by DMC at AMCH over the past two years to tackle recurring unauthorised vending and encroachment on the hospital premises. A similar large-scale eviction was carried out on May 31 this year, when illegal shops that caused traffic congestion on campus were dismantled. In Dec 2024, unauthorised food kiosks near the super-speciality units, blood bank and hostel areas were removed over hygiene and safety concerns.Unlike the May drive, which focused mainly on clearing obstructions, Thursday’s action placed greater emphasis on food safety and sanitation. DMC officials said surprise inspections would continue at AMCH and other public institutions, and violators would face strict action.
