Dibrugarh: Police destroyed seized narcotics at the Assam Medical College and Hospital Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility on Friday, coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.The drugs, comprising 271g of heroin and 77kg of marijuana with an estimated international market value of Rs 1.4 crore, were incinerated under the supervision of IGPW (law & order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh, Dibrugarh SSP Abhijit Gurav and other senior officials.Speaking to reporters, IGP Singh said the destruction was carried out after obtaining the requisite court permissions. He added that the last such disposal in Dibrugarh had taken place in Sept 2025. In the nine months since, police have registered 67 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 112 accused, all of whom have been forwarded to judicial custody.“We destroyed the contraband after obtaining the necessary permission from the competent court. We will continue coordinated action against peddlers, suppliers and organised networks,” the IGP said.The incineration was conducted under Section 52-A of the NDPS Act, 1985, and overseen by the District Drug Disposal Committee. Officials preserved necessary samples before the destruction to ensure the integrity of ongoing investigations and court proceedings.IGP Singh said, “I urge students to stay away from drugs. Parents and community members should be alert and inform the police about any suspicious activity. Share information with us, and we will act.”
