Bengaluru: A dialysis unit was launched at Vanivilas Hospital, the state-run maternity centre, Tuesday. The facility will benefit pregnant women, particularly those from economically weaker sections, with pre-existing kidney disease. Until now, patients from Vanivilas were referred to other hospitals for dialysis, but the new unit is expected to reduce risks for both mother and child while making treatment more accessible and affordable.Dr Savitha C, medical superintendent and professor at the hospital, said: “Being a govt maternity hospital, we manage a high volume of high-risk pregnancies, often complicated by conditions such as pre-eclampsia and acute kidney injury. The availability of an in-house dialysis unit is critical in such emergencies, ensuring timely, life-saving care for both mother and child. It also minimises delays and risks associated with patient transfers.“
