Chandigarh: AAP MLA from Ajnala Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal on Tuesday urged Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria to press the Centre for construction of the Ujh dam to curb recurring floods in the border region and boost development.Accompanied by a delegation of local representatives, Dhaliwal said the Ujh river, flowing from Jammu and Kashmir through Punjab’s border districts, causes extensive damage by the time it reaches Ajnala, washing away crops, roads and fertile agricultural land.He said the Centre’s proposal to construct a dam on the river had been pending for 10-12 years and urged the governor to raise the issue with the Prime Minister and Union ministry of Jal Shakti.Dhaliwal said the project would also generate power, provide irrigation and create employment opportunities. He added that the recurring flood threat had deterred industrialists from setting up units in the area.Dhaliwal also claimed that the Rs 1,600 crore compensation announced by the Prime Minister had not been received and sought timely action.
