Garbage fires add to Ludhiana’s pollution burden, raise safety concerns

Ludhiana: Despite repeated concerns over deteriorating air quality and environmental pollution, incidents of garbage burning continue to be reported at several locations across the city, posing a threat to public health and safety. The incidents are taking place in plots and along roadsides where people dump garbage and then set it on fire. Civic officials were asked to clear roadside garbage and ensure checks on fires, but with more waste being generated during Diwali, garbage lifting is failing to keep pace. While smoke from burning waste adds to air pollution, fire officials have also warned that unattended fires and flying sparks could trigger bigger fires, particularly near residential colonies, shops and roadside establishments.A fire official said burning garbage, often comprising plastic, polythene and other combustible materials, releases toxic smoke and harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.Fire officials cautioned that even a small fire in a garbage heap could spread quickly, especially in dry and windy conditions. Flying sparks from burning waste may reach nearby combustible materials, increasing the risk of accidental fires. They stressed the need to ensure that garbage heaps are not set on fire and that such incidents are reported to authorities concerned immediately.Residents have complained of breathing difficulties and irritation in their eyes and throats. The practice is also adding to the city’s pollution burden.Environmental activists have pointed out that open burning of municipal waste defeats the purpose of scientific waste management.Activist Kuldeep Singh Khaira said the civic body needed to strengthen monitoring and ensure strict action against those responsible rather than allowing garbage heaps to become potential sources of pollution and fire hazards.
