Varanasi: A 21-year-old delivery executive was crushed to death by a garbage dumper of Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) near Maulavibagh in Sigra police station area late on Monday.The deceased identified as Sahil, a resident of Jalalipura Saraiya under Jaitpura police station, was the sole earning member of his family after his father’s death five years ago. Police said he worked as a delivery executive with an online grocery shopping app and was returning home after completing a delivery, when the accident took place.Following the accident, scores of delivery executives gathered outside Sigra police station, alleging police inaction. However, after CCTV footage revealed that Sahil had fallen onto the road after hitting a roadside garbage container and was subsequently run over by the dumper before its driver could notice him, the protesters dispersed.Sigra SHO Shivakant Mishra said the body has been sent for postmortem and the municipal corporation asked to provide details of the dumper so that appropriate legal action could be initiated against its driver after registration of an FIR.Police said CCTV cameras installed on nearby buildings showed that Sahil lost control of his motorcycle on the rain-slick road while passing through Maulavibagh. His motorcycle first struck a roadside garbage container, causing him to fall onto the road. Moments later, a garbage dumper passed through the stretch and ran over him. The dumper driver fled the spot after the accident. Passersby informed the police, who rushed Sahil to SSPG Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
