Delhi horror: 70-year-old man bludgeons friend (44) to death; held

NEW DELHI: A 70-year-old man from Nepal was arrested for allegedly killing a friend of his by repeatedly hitting him with a hammer following a monetary dispute at Kaka Mohalla in southwest Delhi’s Chhawla early Wednesday.The son of the owner of a property where the two were tenants alerted police about the incident at 8.11am. Cops rushed to the spot and found Sanjay Sain Dhariwal (44) dead inside the room he used to live in. His co-tenant, Durga Singh, the alleged killer, was injured. He claimed Dhariwal had first attacked him.A resident of Sultanpuri, Dhariwal was unmarried and worked as a mason. He was estranged from his family. Singh, who told police that he was an ex-serviceman and retired in 1998, was taken to RTR Hospital and later referred to Safdarjung Hospital after suffering significant blood loss. He is being treated there.The two men rented a small room for Rs 2,500 a month and were involved in petty work. They began quarrelling after Tuesday midnight over a monetary dispute, police said. During the altercation, Dhariwal allegedly attacked Singh with a knife before the latter retaliated with a hammer, repeatedly striking him to death.Singh called up Rajvir (51), the property owner, at 7.16am and asked him to come to the building. When Rajvir reached there, Singh opened the door. It was then that police were informed.The hammer was found at the spot. Cops and a forensic science laboratory team inspected the scene of the crime and collected evidence. An FIR under Section 103(1) of BNS pertaining to murder was registered against Singh at Chhawla police station.
