Car hits and drags bike down Africa Avenue, FIR against driver

New Delhi: A man driving a sedan dragged a motorbike that he had hit for 50-100 metres on Africa Avenue around 10pm Thursday, while commuters repeatedly honked to stop his car.The bike rider, Tanish Tokas (21), was knocked off the bike when 73-year-old Venu Gopal’s car hit the two-wheeler. Tokas, fortunately, escaped without any serious injury.The incident happened on the road from Bhikaji Cama Place towards RK Puram metro station. Videos recorded by commuters show the blue Honda Amaze dragging the black motorcycle, with one side of the bike stuck under the car. Sparks flew off the road as the motorcycle scraped its surface. Investigators suspect the bike was dragged for 50-100 metres.In one video, the driver of a car moving beside the Honda Amaze is seen repeatedly honking, indicating that the offending motorist must stop. The sedan eventually stops, following which commuters confront the driver. One person is heard asking the driver what would have happened if the motorcycle rider had also been dragged along with the bike. The driver is seen apologising.Police later said Tokas, from Munirka village, was sitting on his parked bike by the roadside when Venu Gopal’s car hit it.Venu Gopal was returning home to Vasant Kunj. “He told us that after hitting the bike, he was not trying to flee but was trying to stop and had already turned on the indicator lights. His statement is being verified,” police said. The bike rider was a student and was also on his way home.Police clarified that Tokas himself was not dragged with the bike. He was medically examined and was found to be largely unharmed.Information about the incident reached the RK Puram police station around 10.22pm, after which police rushed to the spot. An FIR under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of BNS was registered at RK Puram police station.Police have seized the car and apprehended Venu Gopal. He was also medically examined. He wasn’t inebriated.
