Ahmedabad: Despite the commencement of inter-college sports tournaments, Gujarat University (GU) is yet to allot seats under the sports quota even as intercollege tournaments have begun, and the admission process has reached its final stages. This has raised concerns among applicants and stakeholders. While Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) has collected sports quota details from universities across the state, GU continues to follow a separate process. Unlike other state universities, which allot sports quota seats through GCAS, GU forms its own committee and invites applications independently.Sources said more than 120 students have applied for admission under the sports quota this year. However, no allotment has been made so far, leaving students who were banking on their sporting achievements for admission worried.Congress spokesperson Subhan Saiyed criticised the university authorities over the delay. He said that while the govt speaks about hosting the Olympics in 2036, it has failed to ensure timely admissions for students under the sports quota. He added that with inter-college tournaments already underway, students admitted earlier could have represented the university in sporting events.Sources said several talented athletes have already taken admission to other universities and colleges due to the uncertainty, resulting in a potential loss of sporting talent for GU.Students and stakeholders have demanded that the university immediately complete the allotment process for the remaining applicants to prevent further hardship for sportspersons seeking admission under the quota.
