Varanasi: Saraimir police in Azamgarh arrested Mohd Sabir, 28, following exchange of fire in which he suffered bullet injury between Sadarpur and Kadanpatti early on Wednesday morning.Sabir was being searched by police teams after they butchered two bovine near river Kunwar river and fled the scene leaving animal waste and remains at the site. According to Azamgarh’s CO (Phulpur) Kiran Pal Singh, after recovery of the remains of two prohibited animals on Sept 8 from a field near the Kunwar river in Sadarpur (Shahpur) village under Saraimir police station a case was registered under section 3/8 of the Cow Slaughter Prevention Act against unidentified persons. Three police teams were engaged to arrest those involved.On Wednesday early morning Saraimir cops were alerted by informers regarding movement of criminals carrying weapons used in the slaughter between Sadarpur towards Kadanpatti. When policemen cordoned off the area all four suspects tried to flee. Three managed to escape taking advantage of darkness and fields, while Sabir was surrounded when he fired at police team. In retaliatory firing he suffered bullet injury in leg and caught by police.Police recovered country-made pistol, cartridges, a chopper, two knives and a wooden block allegedly used in the slaughter. During initial interrogation Sabir confessed that his gang was involved in selling the meat after butchering stray bovine. He also divulged names of his gang members.
