Court permits rape accused boxer to travel to Dubai for competition

Panaji: A fast track court has granted professional boxer Pushpender Rathi permission to travel to Dubai next month to participate in a boxing competition.The national medal-winning boxer accused of raping a 21-year-old woman under the pretext of marriage sought permission to travel as he has been selected to represent India in a series of fights at Meydan, Dubai, titled ‘Battle of Nations’, which is slated to take place on July 17.Rathi, a native of Haryana, had represented Goa in the 36th National Games in Gujarat and won a bronze medal. The court observed that he has been regular in attendance and produced his passport and documents showing there is a boxing event in Dubai.“There is a reason to believe that the accused intends to travel out of India for bonafide reasons,” the court held granting him permission to travel from July 13 to 24.The court directed him to provide his phone number and ensure that it is in working condition at all times and provide a detailed address of his stay in Dubai and remain physically present before the court on the next date of hearing.
