Dimapur: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) on Saturday appealed to the Nagaland govt to constitute, by a statute, an autonomous Nagaland Inner Line Regulation Commission, with full powers to formulate rules and regulations to ensure stringent enforcement of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR), 1873, in the state.“The commission also must have the autonomy to take all or any decision(s) that supplement building a robust mechanism for smooth and balanced implementation of the Inner Line Regulation,” the federation in a representation to CM Neiphiu Rio said.It also demanded that all matters related to the BEFR, 1873, be placed under the Nagaland Inner Line Regulation Commission to ensure holistic planning. The NSF said its deliberations on the issue were still under way at a two-day seminar that began on Friday. After the proceedings are summed up and compiled, the federation will submit a consolidated set of recommendations to the govt for consideration, it said. The federation clarified that Saturday’s representation focused on the single demand of setting up the autonomous commission, which it regards as the foundation upon which every other measure must rest. The NSF and its Inner Line Regulation Commission assured the govt of their fullest cooperation in giving effect to this measure. It also appreciated the govt’s continued commitment to protecting the rights of Nagaland’s indigenous people. The NSF sought an appointment with the CM to discuss the matter.
