Chandigarh: Alleging corruption, lack of transparency and procedural violations in the municipal corporation (MC), Chandigarh, the Chandigarh Congress Friday urged the UT administrator to dissolve the current house and bring amendments to the Municipal Corporation Act. It also demanded the introduction of an anti-defection law to prevent alleged horse-trading during mayoral elections.Calling for sweeping reforms in the civic body, Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky advocated the implementation of an anti-defection law, a fixed five-year tenure for the mayor and a system of direct mayoral elections. He said such measures were necessary to ensure stability, transparency and accountability in city governance.Lucky alleged that the functioning of the MC in recent years had deeply disappointed residents and tarnished Chandigarh’s image as a model city known for its planning and administration. He claimed that repeated controversies involving corruption, poor decision-making and lack of transparency had eroded public trust in the civic body.Referring to the recent controversy surrounding the Rs 227 crore table agenda, Congress leaders said the episode raised serious questions about the corporation’s functioning. They alleged that attempts were made to push major financial decisions without adequate discussion or scrutiny and said such practices could not be allowed in a democratic institution.The party also flagged concerns over the 24×7 water supply project, the Dadumajra garbage plant, the city’s waste management system and civic issues in Dadumajra and Manimajra. According to Congress leaders, these controversies have weakened public confidence in the municipal administration and underscored the need for structural reforms in the MC.
