Congress alleges development works stalled in Mohali, targets AAP govt

Mohali: The Congress Friday stepped up its attack on the AAP govt in Punjab, with former Mohali mayor Jeeti Sidhu alleging that development works in the city have come to a standstill despite the state govt, local MLA and municipal corporation being controlled by the same party.Addressing mediapersons during a visit to the office of Phase IX councillor Kamalpreet Singh Banni, Sidhu questioned AAP MLA Kulwant Singh and mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana over the status of several key infrastructure projects, including the proposed auditorium, civil hospital and bus stand. He said residents were still awaiting completion of these projects despite repeated assurances.Referring to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Sidhu urged Congress workers to ensure that no eligible voter is omitted and that ineligible names are not retained in the rolls.Sidhu said the Congress-led municipal corporation had earlier been criticised because the civic body and the state govt were run by different parties. With the govt, MLA and mayor now belonging to the same party, he said, there should be no justification for delays in development works. He also asked the MLA to disclose the financial assistance secured from the state govt for Mohali. The former mayor alleged that roads and streets across the city were in poor condition, garbage had accumulated at several locations and sewer desilting work was not being carried out effectively. He claimed that a proposal to procure modern desilting machines, initiated during his tenure, was later shelved despite a successful demonstration.Raising concerns over waste management, Sidhu questioned the disposal of unprocessed municipal waste collected from RMC points and the Jagatpura processing plant. He alleged that the site identified for waste dumping had not become operational and claimed that waste and dry leaves were being dumped in the Leisure Valley area of Phase VIII. He demanded clarification from the MLA and mayor on whether waste was being disposed of as per prescribed norms.Sidhu further claimed that the municipal corporation had received grants worth nearly Rs 100 crore during his tenure under the previous Congress govt and alleged that no comparable financial support had been provided by the present AAP dispensation. He urged the state govt and the MC to expedite pending projects and fulfil commitments made to the residents of Mohali.
