CMRS directs BMRCL to investigate 3 years of Metro disruptions

Bengaluru: Chief commissioner of railway safety and commissioner of Metro railway safety (southern range), Janak Kumar Garg, has directed Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to investigate Metro service disruptions reported over the last three years and submit a report detailing the corrective measures taken. The authority has also asked BMRCL to carry out an audit of the effectiveness of its operational and maintenance practices. The directive follows a representation by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, who had written to the commissioner, seeking a safety and maintenance audit of Namma Metro operations. Citing media reports, the MP stated nearly 20 service disruptions had occurred over the past three years due to technical and other issues, with a majority reported on the Purple Line. In recent weeks, repeated disruptions, particularly at Cubbon Park station, caused severe inconvenience to commuters. In a reply to the MP, the CMRS said under the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002, the commissioner conducts statutory inquiries into accidents involving loss of life or grievous injury, sanctions the opening of new Metro lines, and approves the introduction of new rolling stock, among other responsibilities. The letter added that the day-to-day operation and maintenance required for the safe and reliable functioning of the Metro railway system remain the responsibility of the Metro railway administration.
