Guwahati: The city is being decorated ahead of the chief minister’s swearing-in-ceremony, which is set to take place on Tuesday. Preparations are underway across different parts of the city as authorities have assigned duties to give the city a fresh look before the event.Officials from the public works department (PWD) said workers have been repainting pavements, road dividers and railings in several areas of the city. Decorative lights have been installed on some flyovers and lamp posts to brighten up the city ahead of the ceremony.“Cleaning drives have also been carried out in many places, with workers from Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) clearing garbage and cleaning public spaces,” said GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania.“Areas in Khanapara, where the swearing-in ceremony will take place, are being cleaned up everyday, and our workers are prepared. Lakhs of people will be present there during the ceremony, including PM Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah, union ministers and chief ministers from different states. Our workers will be actively on duty,” Sarania addded.Areas surrounding the ceremony venue and the major roads leading to it are receiving special attention from the administration. Police and traffic officials have begun making arrangements to regulate vehicular movement and ensure security during the event. “No heavy vehicles such as trucks, dumpers, JCBs, hydras, and other slow-moving vehicles will be allowed on NH-27 from Koinadhora Point to Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra and onward to Azara,” said DCP (traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Borah.Borah also urged residents to avoid NH-27 on the day of the swearing-in ceremony and instead use the Guwahati–Shillong Road. “Passengers travelling to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport are advised to leave at least two hours before their scheduled departure,” he said. Traffic restrictions will be in place from 9 am to 2 pm.
