Chandigarh: Chandigarh defeated Punjab by five wickets in an exhibition wheelchair cricket match organised by the Wheelchair Cricket Association, Chandigarh Tricity, at DAV College, Sector 10, Saturday. The match was held under the ‘Stronger Without Drugs’ campaign to promote inclusion, sports and a drug-free society.The Punjab governor, who attended as chief guest, interacted with the players and administered an anti-drug pledge to both teams, urging youngsters to choose sports, fitness and discipline over substance abuse.Batting first after winning the toss, Punjab scored 109/5 in 15 overs, with Raja making 31 off 22 balls and Hardeep Singh Gill contributing 20. Chandigarh chased down the target in 13.5 overs, reaching 112/5. Rohit Anotra starred with a blistering 55 off 22 deliveries, while Ranjit Singh remained unbeaten on 29 to guide the team home.Rupesh K Singh, president of the Wheelchair Cricket Association, Chandigarh Tricity, said the match celebrated determination and talent, showcasing how sport can help individuals overcome challenges when given the right opportunities.Backing the initiative, Punjab Cricket Association president Amarjeet Mehta announced modern sports wheelchairs for all 24 players from the two teams and said the next Chandigarh-Punjab fixture would be staged under floodlights at the PCA ground.The governor later distributed trophies and individual awards, including Man of the Match and Bowler of the Match. Chandigarh received a cash prize of Rs 21,000, while runners-up Punjab were awarded Rs 11,000.
