Varanasi: Two cattle smugglers were arrested after an exchange of fire with police in Ballia district’s Bansdih Road area early Sunday, during which one of the accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg.Ballia ASP (Northern) Dinesh Kumar Shukla said a police team was conducting night patrolling and vehicle checking at the Bansdih Road tri-junction when, around 2.35 am, they received information that two persons were herding a bovine from Chhata village towards Bansdih Road. Acting on the tip-off, the police reached the spot and attempted to stop them.However, on spotting the police, the duo allegedly opened fire on the police team in an attempt to escape, Shukla said. In retaliatory firing by the police, one of the accused, identified as Kayamuddin alias Raju (28), a resident of Islamabad Kajipura, sustained a bullet injury to his right leg. Police also arrested his accomplice, Deepak Ansari (40), a resident of Rasra.A country-made pistol, live cartridges and a bovine were recovered from their possession. The injured accused was later admitted to a hospital for treatment.
