Pune: Two bike-borne men in helmets posed as police constables to dupe a Cantonment water supply department staffer out of Rs38,000 around 3.40am on Sunday. The suspects pretended to check the complainant’s phone to con him.The complainant, a contractual staffer with the department registered an FIR with the Wanowrie police on Monday evening.Wanowrie police senior inspector Pandit Rejitwad said, “The complainant works at the Cantonment water pumping station and reaches his workplace around dawn. After starting the pumping units, he and two of his colleagues went for a walk when the suspects approached them and conned him.”“They asked the complainant, a native of Uttar Pradesh, and his friends some basic questions and questioned their presence in the area. They took the complainant’s mobile phone on the pretext of checking it,” he said.“They then obtained his mobile phone password and UPI PIN. They transferred Rs 38,000 from his account using his UPI application and sped away,” he said.“We have obtained the phone number to which the money was transferred and are searching for the suspects,” Rejitwad said.Police are also studying the CCTV footage of the various establishments to ascertain the registration number of the motorcycle used by the duo to execute the crime.
