Kolkata: Different pay scales for posts with the same degree of responsibility, reliability and confidentiality are invalid, Calcutta High Court held on April 17 while rejecting Visva-Bharati’s appeal against paying assistant professors of a school under the university the same as the university’s assistant professors.The varsity filed an appeal before the division bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Partha Sarathi Chatterjee against a single judge’s order directing payment of the arrears to an assistant professor of a school under the university. “Law is not absolute logic but handmaid of current social facts of life… The difference sought to be created among assistant professors of a school under the university and assistant professors of university is not based on legitimate foundation,” the division bench held.Sandeep Kumar Bhakat has BSc (Hons) in mathematics, MSc and PhD from VB. He was made assistant lecturer in a school under the university on Jan 15, 1989, when equal pay was granted to an assistant lecturer, redesignated as an assistant professor, in a school and to an assistant professor of the university.
