Silchar: The death of a 48-year-old man in an alleged hit-and-run case triggered a three-hour blockade on a national highway at Harinchhara under Barkhola police station in Cachar district late on Saturday night.Police said the victim, Surajlal Bauri, was critically injured after being hit by a motorcycle. He was taken to Barkhola Primary Health Centre and later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.After news of his death reached the area, local residents blocked the highway at around 11.30pm, demanding that the district commissioner visit the spot before they lifted the protest.The blockade continued till around 2.30am on Sunday, leaving several vehicles stranded on the busy stretch. Traffic movement resumed after the protesters dispersed.Police said the motorcyclist fled the spot after the accident. A case has been registered and efforts are on to trace the accused, police added.
