Cab driver held for abducting woman

Kolkata: A 35-year-old woman, the wife of a senior advocate, was allegedly abducted and criminally intimidated by an app cabby on Sunday. The woman was reportedly driven off and her husband left behind at a central Kolkata bus stand, leading to a frantic rescue operation involving Kolkata Police. The driver has been arrested.The resident of north Kolkata, and son of a former Kolkata Police ASI, booked a taxi from Kiran Sankar Roy Road to his residence around 1.20 pm. His wife was accompanying him. According to the FIR, trouble began when the driver, Abdul Ghaffar, allegedly demanded an inflated fare.At the Dharmatala bus stand, the complainant said when he wanted to board the car, he was asked to pay Rs 350 instead of Rs 238 shown on the app. The driver settled for Rs 300. When the advocate contacted the app’s customer care, the fare was negotiated to Rs 290. While he was standing outside the car, the driver sped away with his wife inside the vehicle. The advocate said he immediately dialled 100 to report the abduction.The woman was taken towards Kidderpore. She said the driver subjected her to a barrage of “filthy language”, apart from threats of rape. The accused also said his aides would harm her husband. The woman was eventually rescued by Kolkata Police. Cops have started a case.
