Mumbai: A BMC school in Govandi’s Sanjay Nagar allegedly being used to tether goats came under scrutiny at the civic education committee meeting on Thursday, with nominated corporator Nikhil Vyas seeking a probe into it. Vyas raised the issue through a point of objection, questioning how a school meant for students could be used for keeping livestock.“Is this school meant for education or animal husbandry? Are we now going to introduce animal husbandry in the curriculum?” he asked.Vyas said the incident raised questions about who was exerting pressure on the school management and whether the school watchman was acting in collusion with local pressure groups. He demanded an inquiry to establish who was behind the alleged pressure and how goats were allowed inside the school premises.Several committee members backed the demand for action. Corporator Swapna Mhatre sought immediate intervention by civic officials and said officials found negligent in acting against the encroachment should also be held accountable.Another corporator Sushma Samant said civic officials should not succumb to local pressure or intimidation and demanded stringent action against those responsible. Corporator Yogita Koli termed the incident shocking and said the issue had come to light only after it was raised before the committee.Education Committee chairperson Rajeshree Shirwadkar expressed displeasure over the incident and directed the civic administration to submit a detailed report at the next committee meeting. The committee decided to keep the issue pending until the administration submits its report.
