Bicholim: The Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) on Wednesday cleared decomposed waste and removed overflowing garbage bins from the town’s central market following repeated complaints from residents, traders and devotees about a foul stench.Five bins packed with rotting waste had reportedly gone uncleared for several days, creating discomfort for shoppers and shopkeepers, and for devotees visiting the nearby Koteshwar temple. General store owner Priyanka Naik said the civic body failed to clear the bins on time, making it difficult for customers and traders to remain in the area.Koteshwar temple committee secretary Mahesh Yende said the central market was an unsuitable spot for garbage bins and that the municipality acted only after repeated representations. He urged the BMC to identify an alternative location for waste disposal.The odour intensified on Tuesday night to the extent that some residents suspected there was a dead person or animal in the bins, and alerted the police. An inspection found no such evidence. On Wednesday morning, BMC officials confirmed the smell was from decomposed garbage in the overflowing bins, after which municipal workers cleared the waste and removed the bins.
