Noida: Thousands of residents across multiple sectors in Noida woke up on Thursday to a rude shock — dirty, pale yellow to black-coloured water flowing from their taps, triggering a wave of health concerns and anger. Noida Authority attributed the brackish supply to temperature-induced scaling in water distribution lines.Over 25,000 residents across Sectors 19, 40, and 20, among others, complained following the contaminated water supply on Thursday morning, saying it was unusable even for basic household chores. The problem, however, had begun a day earlier — BB Majumdar, a resident of C Block, Sector 19, said the water had been brackish since Wednesday. “We could not use it for daily chores, and no tankers were supplied by the authority either,” he said.RC Gupta, president of the Sector 19 RWA, said videos of the discoloured water were circulated to authority officials and community groups, but drew no response. “At 8.40 am on Thursday, we got dirty, black-coloured water from taps in the kitchens and washrooms of households in A, B, and C blocks of Sector 19,” he said. “It is very shameful that they are supplying such gutter water for drinking purposes. Who is responsible? Despite repeated complaints and regular payment of water bills, no action is being taken.”The problem was not limited to taps — Gupta confirmed that overhead tanks were also filled with the contaminated water, warning that the health impact on residents could linger for months. The foul supply persisted into the evening.Mohinder Singh of the Sector 40 RWA echoed the frustration. “How often should residents clean their overhead tanks, which keep getting contaminated with this dirty, untreated water?” he asked.Yogendra Sharma, president of the Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations, said he raised the matter with the concerned officials, who assured him the issue would be resolved shortly.RP Singh, deputy general manager of the water and sewer department, told TOI that summer temperatures cause scaling to loosen inside distribution lines, discolouring the supply. “The only remedy is proper flushing of the pipes, which was done on Thursday. By evening, the situation was brought under control and the morning supply will be fine,” he said.Singh added that pipe checking and flushing had been ongoing for four days to ensure clean, potable water. However, several blockages — or dead ends — were found in Sector 19’s water lines, which are being addressed as they are located.
