The BJP dominated Gujarat’s local body elections, securing nearly 60% of the vote in municipal corporations and maintaining a strong lead across taluka panchayats, district panchayats, and municipalities
AHMEDABAD: The BJP secured nearly 60% vote share in Gujarat’s 15 municipal corporations, underlining its strong dominance in urban local body elections. The party won 59.36% of the vote in the corporations, far ahead of the Congress at 26.46% and the Aam Aadmi Party at 10.27%.The corporation results stood out as the BJP’s best performance across all tiers of local govt, showing its continued strength in major urban centres. The outcome also underlines a decision of announcement of nine new municipal corporations, adding significance to the party’s urban support base.
Across the broader local body elections, the BJP maintained a clear lead in every category. In 260 taluka panchayats, the party secured exactly 51% vote share, compared with 32.89% for the Congress and 12.67% for AAP. In 34 district panchayats, the BJP won 52.37%, while the Congress got 33.7% and AAP 12.4%.In 84 municipalities, the BJP recorded 52.51% vote share, again ahead of the Congress at 30.68%. AAP, however, performed poorly in this segment, managing only 4.89%, much lower than its showing in corporations, taluka panchayats and district panchayats.Overall, the BJP’s average vote share across local bodies stood at 52.81%, confirming its broad electoral advantage in both urban and rural areas. Its support was strongest in municipal corporations, while in rural segments such as taluka and district panchayats it remained steady at around 51% to 52.5%.The Congress vote share remained relatively consistent across taluka panchayats, district panchayats and municipalities, ranging from about 30% to 33.7%, but it lagged sharply behind the BJP in corporations. AAP maintained around 12% in most categories, but its weak municipality performance highlighted uneven support across regions.
