Varanasi: School of Biochemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) professor Vikash Kumar Dubey has been elected Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), under the ministry of health and family welfare.The prestigious NAMS Fellowship recognises distinguished contributions to medicine, health and education in India. Dubey is currently the only faculty member at IIT-BHU to hold the Fellowship of NAMS.His research lies at the interface of engineering, biology and medicine, with a focus on drug discovery, vaccine development and translational therapeutic solutions. He has made significant contributions to biomedical research in the areas of protein biochemistry, molecular parasitology, mechanisms of cell death and drug discovery for neglected tropical diseases, particularly visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar). His research has contributed to a deeper understanding of the molecular biology of leishmania parasites and the development of novel treatment strategies for drug-resistant infections.Dubey has published more than 180 research papers in leading international journals, secured multiple US and Indian patents, supervised numerous doctoral scholars and collaborated with several national and international research institutions.He has also made significant contributions to the academic and administrative activities of IIT-BHU as Dean (research & development), associate dean (academic affairs) and coordinator of the School of Biochemical Engineering. He is presently coordinator of the Sustainable Development Centre.Director, IIT-BHU, Prof Amit Patra, said Dubey’s fellowship will strengthen IIT-BHU’s growing presence in high-impact biomedical research and national scientific leadership.
