Times News NetworkPanchkula: With Independence Day approaching, cyber fraudsters are devising new ways to dupe people. Such attempts may be made by sending fake APK files to mobile phone users in the guise of Independence Day greetings, patriotic videos, event details or digital cards.Panchkula police have advised residents to remain vigilant against such messages and files.According to DCP (Crime and Traffic) Amrinder Singh, cyber fraudsters may send messages via WhatsApp, SMS and social media platforms, ostensibly containing special Independence Day videos, event details or digital cards. These messages may include an APK file or a suspicious link, prompting recipients to download and install the file on their mobile phones. Once installed, cyber criminals could gain access to sensitive information stored on the device, intercept messages and OTPs, and misuse banking details.Police commissioner Pankaj Nain has advised people not to download or install any APK file received from an unknown number. He also cautioned against opening suspicious links received through WhatsApp or other social media platforms. Residents have been advised not to grant permission to install apps from unknown sources on their mobile phones, even if prompted by someone else. They should verify information regarding Independence Day events only through the official channels of the concerned government department or institution. If a suspicious APK file is installed inadvertently, users should immediately disconnect their device from the internet, uninstall the suspicious app, change passwords for critical accounts and contact their bank. In case of cyber fraud, victims should immediately report the matter through the cybercrime helpline at 1930 so that efforts can be made to secure the defrauded funds in time.A police official said that, so far, no such case has come to light in Panchkula, though people have been cheated through similar frauds in other areas.
