Bethora gram sabha adjourned after villagers refuse to confirm minutes

Ponda: The gram sabha of Bethora-Nirankal-Conxem-Codar village panchayat was adjourned on Sunday after villagers refused to confirm the minutes of the previous meeting, alleging that the panchayat had acted in violation of a resolution opposing plot development in the village.More than 150 villagers attended the meeting and questioned the panchayat over the permission granted for plot development at Bethora, despite an earlier gram sabha resolution against such projects within its jurisdiction.Tensions escalated after the panchayat secretary read out the minutes of the previous meeting. Villagers confronted sarpanch Akshay Gaonkar over the permission granted for the development. Gaonkar tried to pacify them, saying the necessary permissions had been issued in accordance with court directives.Dnyaneshwar Khandeparkar, a resident of Kasamshell-Bethora, said villagers would challenge the decision.Another villager, Devendra Chari, said the July 19 gram sabha had resolved not to allow plot development, but the panchayat granted permission at its fortnightly meeting on July 29.He also alleged that the plot owner had illegally cut a hill.Chari said the village was already facing a drinking water shortage and further plot development would aggravate the crisis.
