BEL alerts MC after burglaries hit 8 CCTV network sites

Chandigarh: Installed to enhance security, the city’s CCTV camera network is now facing a threat from burglars, with incidents of theft reported at field locations of the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has identified eight field locations across the city where such incidents have been reported over the past few months.Field locations are points from where optical fibre cables are laid to connect CCTV cameras at multiple sites, including entry and exit points of the city, commercial and high-traffic areas, and prominent public locations. In a letter to the MC commissioner, BEL asked the civic body to take strict action by lodging FIRs in the theft cases.All eight locations mentioned by BEL are crucial junctions in the city. Four of them are located along the Chandigarh-Delhi National Highway (NH-44).The locations identified are Poultry Farm Chowk, Railway Light Point, Bapudham Light Point, Hallomajra Light Point, Batra Chowk, Airport Chowk, Sector 37/41 city surveillance and Sector 28/29.BEL informed the MC that in some cases, the faces of those involved in the thefts were captured by CCTV cameras, which could help in the investigation.In the letter, BEL said, “We would like to bring to your kind notice that repeated burglary incidents are taking place at the following ICCC field locations during the last two months. These incidents are affecting the ICCC field network and causing disruption to the functioning of field cameras, as well as cameras installed at police stations.
